Dr.D.S.Chouhan,
Professor (Retired)
Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology,
College of Veterinary and Animal Science,
Bikaner 334001 Rajasthan India
The clinical diagnosis, accuracy and precision of surgery was taught to me by my teacher and Head of Department. Understanding of diverse surgical affections and handling of camels and other species being treated in the clinic of department would have been impossible without him. His principles of aseptic and timeless surgery were like prints of indelible ink in my mind and soul. He possessed the qualities of a true surgeon, i.e. lady’s finger, eagle’s eye and Solomen’s wisdom. His quality of assessment of surgery of animals and postoperative care always kept us as awake and aware surgeon who was more fearful to him than owner of animal being operated. He was my supervisor in Master’s programme also. I had his blessings and company since 1978 to 1999. It was his insistence that I joined my doctorate programme at CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar (Haryana) in December 1986 and had exposure to learned faculty and advance thoracic and orthopaedic surgery. My teacher Dr.D.S.Chouhan was like an unsung hero of camel surgery. Many areas of camel surgery, anaesthesia, orthopaedics and radiology were developed by him. He was first to do Master’s research on mandibular fractures in camels and tried few techniques to repair it, other than inderdental wiring. He guided research on various aspects of camel surgery and anesthesia. He always inspired me for clinical research in large animals as he always believed it to be a productive research. Camel owners knew him in every village of Bikaner and adjoining districts because of his good treatment skills. Since there was no book on camel surgery, he inspired me to write one book on “Camel Surgery” which can help veterinarians and paraveterinary staff. The book became a dream true in 1992. His vision and guidance shall always remain in my spirit and soul. I shall always remember him as a turning point of my career.

Dr.Jit Singh
Additional Director of Research
Professor,
Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology
College of Veterinary Sciences,
Hisar 125004, Haryana India
Dr.Jit Singh was my major advisor in doctorate programme while at CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar. I was quite excited to have him as my major advisor as he remained a pioneer surgeon in the treatment of Diaphragmatic hernia in buffaloes. He published the first clinical report on this disease from India. His classic experimental and clinical research were published in the journals of national and international repute. When I joined him as a student, he had just returned from his academic or teaching assignment from Libya. In a brief span of one year with him in 1989 I was benefited with many facets of his personality which eventually helped elevating my academic horizon. His scientific vision and writing skills are immense. I cannot forget his tremendous stamina of sitting from 7 am to 7 pm for scientific writing, operations and other important assignments. Amazing fact about his perfect writing skills was that when his pen touches the page, it would finish with a grammatically and scientifically correct sentence. I was greatly benefited with his remarkable editorial skills. He edited my first book, “Camel Surgery” in 1990 and thereafter “Selected Topics on Camelids” in 1998-1999 which was my dream book. He wrote me 4 page letter to apprise me about the responsibilities of an editor when I told him about the launching of a new journal, “Journal of Camel Practice and Research” in 1994, as an editor. He was a torch light of inspiration for me at all the fronts of academia and research. I always find him around me while performing the academic and research activities and feel that his watchful eyes are looking to my productive work for the veterinary profession, all the time. I shall always remember him as a turning point of my career.
